Camshaft Position Sensor Problems: Symptoms and Diagnosis

The camshaft position sensor tells the engine computer where the camshaft is, so it can time fuel injection, spark and variable valve timing. When the signal is lost or erratic, the engine may run poorly or not start at all.

Common Symptoms

  • Check engine light with camshaft position sensor circuit or correlation codes.
  • Hard starting, long cranking or no start.
  • Stalling, misfire or hesitation.
  • Reduced power or limp mode on some vehicles.

Diagnosis

  • Read the codes and freeze-frame data before replacing parts.
  • Inspect the connector and wiring harness for oil contamination, corrosion, chafing or heat damage.
  • Check power, ground and signal at the connector using the procedure for the vehicle.
  • Remember that a stretched timing chain or a slipped belt can set correlation codes even when the sensor is good.

Replacement Tips

  • Use the correct sensor for the engine and bank.
  • Install a new O-ring and keep the sensor tip clean.
  • Repair damaged wiring with the correct harness rather than splicing near heat.
  • Clear codes and confirm the repair with a road test.
