Hydraulic lifters use engine oil to keep zero lash in the valvetrain. When a lifter cannot hold oil, or the oil supply is poor, the valvetrain develops a light, rhythmic tick that follows engine speed.

Common Causes

  • Low oil level, the wrong viscosity or sludge.
  • A sticking or collapsed lifter.
  • A worn cam lobe under the lifter.
  • Lifter failure on cylinder-deactivation (AFM/DOD) engines.

Telling It Apart

An exhaust manifold leak can sound like a lifter tick, especially on a cold engine. A mechanic’s stethoscope helps locate the noise. A lifter tick usually comes from the top of the engine and does not fade as the exhaust heats up.

Repair Tips

  • Check oil level and condition first.
  • Inspect the cam lobes before installing new lifters.
  • Replace lifter guides and retainer bolts as specified.
  • Prime hydraulic lifters as directed and use the correct oil.
