Crankshaft End Play and Thrust Bearings: What to Measure

Evergreen Auto Parts and Components > Tech Center > Technical Education > Crankshaft End Play and Thrust Bearings: What to Measure
Oct 14, 2026 Posted by: evergreenparts Technical Education

Crankshaft end play is the amount the crankshaft can move forward and backward in the block. Thrust bearings or thrust washers control it. Too much end play can damage the block, crankshaft and transmission components.

How to Measure

  • Mount a dial indicator against the end of the crankshaft.
  • Pry the crank fully rearward, zero the indicator, then pry it forward.
  • Compare the reading with the specification for the engine.

Common Causes of Thrust Wear

  • Excessive clutch pedal pressure or riding the clutch.
  • Torque converter ballooning or incorrect converter installation.
  • Poor lubrication or contaminated oil.

Installation Tips

  • Install thrust washers with the grooved side facing the crankshaft.
  • Align flanged thrust bearings before final main cap torque, following the procedure for the engine.
  • Recheck end play after final torque.
