Hydraulic power steering uses a belt-driven pump to supply pressure to the steering gear or rack. Most pump problems show up as noise, leaks or heavy steering.

Common Causes of Whine

  • Low fluid level from a leak.
  • Air in the system after a repair.
  • Contaminated or the wrong fluid.
  • A clogged reservoir screen restricting flow.
  • Worn pump bearings or internal wear.

Other Symptoms

  • Heavy or uneven steering effort.
  • Foamy fluid in the reservoir.
  • Fluid leaks at the pump shaft seal or hoses.

Replacement Tips

  • Flush old fluid and debris from the system.
  • Replace a clogged or cracked reservoir.
  • Use the fluid specified for the vehicle.
  • Bleed air thoroughly before driving.
