Hood lift supports, also called engine lid lift supports or gas struts, hold the hood open. They lose pressure over time, especially in cold weather.

Signs of Failure

  • The hood will not stay fully open.
  • The hood drifts down slowly.
  • Oil residue on the support shaft.
  • Bent or damaged supports.

Safe Replacement

  • Have a helper or a prop rod hold the hood before removing a support.
  • Replace supports in pairs for even lifting force.
  • Install with the correct orientation as shown in the instructions.
  • Make sure the end fittings lock fully onto the ball studs.
