The right pistons depend on the condition of the cylinders and the machine work performed. Measuring before ordering avoids the wrong size and poor fit.

Measure the Cylinders

  • Measure each bore for wear, taper and out-of-round with a bore gauge.
  • Decide whether the cylinders can be honed or need to be bored oversize.
  • Order pistons to match the final bore size.

Check Piston-to-Wall Clearance

  • Measure the piston at the point specified by the manufacturer.
  • Subtract from the finished bore size to get clearance.
  • Too tight risks scuffing; too loose causes piston slap.

Other Checks

  • Match compression height and dome or dish design to the original.
  • Install rings with the correct end gap.
  • Install pins and locks correctly and keep pistons matched to their cylinders.
