Installing Camshaft Bearings: Tips for Cam-in-Block Engines

Oct 14, 2026 Posted by: evergreenparts Technical Education

On cam-in-block engines, camshaft bearings support the camshaft and form part of the oil system. Incorrectly installed cam bearings can block oil passages or bind the camshaft.

Before Installation

  • Clean the block and oil passages thoroughly after machining.
  • Identify each bearing position. Cam bearings often differ in size and oil hole location.
  • Inspect the cam bores for damage.

Installation

  • Use a proper cam bearing installer to drive each bearing straight.
  • Align oil holes with the block passages.
  • Set the bearing depth as specified, especially at the front and rear.

After Installation

  • Confirm oil holes are open with a light or wire.
  • Lubricate and install the camshaft and check that it turns freely by hand.
  • Install the rear cam plug with sealant.
