Symptoms of Worn Engine Mounts

Oct 14, 2026 Posted by: evergreenparts Technical Education

Engine mounts hold the engine and transmission in place and absorb vibration before it reaches the body. Most mounts use rubber, and some use hydraulic fluid to damp vibration. Over time the rubber cracks and sags, and hydraulic mounts can leak.

Common Symptoms

  • Increased vibration at idle, often felt in the steering wheel, seats or floor.
  • A clunk or bang when shifting between drive and reverse, or when accelerating and releasing the throttle.
  • Visible engine movement when the engine is revved in gear with the brakes applied.
  • Cracked, separated or collapsed rubber, or fluid leaking from a hydraulic mount.

Why Mounts Wear Out

  • Age, heat and exposure to oil, which softens and degrades rubber.
  • Oil or coolant leaks dripping onto the mount.
  • Repeated hard acceleration and heavy loads.

Replacement Tips

  • Support the engine properly before removing any mount.
  • Inspect all mounts, including the transmission mount and torque strut. When one mount has failed, the others have often been overloaded.
  • Replacing mounts as a set helps restore the original engine position and vibration control.
  • Tighten fasteners to specification with the engine resting in its normal position, so the new mounts are not preloaded.
  • Fix any oil leaks that may have contributed to the failure.
